Workshops
The national workshops are taking place throughout 2009 and will be organized together with ITTO and local partners. The aim of the workshops is to:
-
Increase local understanding of FLR,
-
Identification of a learning site, and
-
Identification of site contact and local stakeholders involved.
This transparent and participatory approach will enhance local ownership, and increase people’s commitment to contribute. Three workshops have already been organized. The introductory workshop on Forest and Landscape Restoration in Brazil was held on 14-15th of October 2009, in Rio Branco, capital of the Brazilian state of Acre. Participants came from Acre, Xingu, and Mata Atlantico, and represented the Brazilian state, the civil society, and a number of private sector companies.
As for the other introductory meetings in Indonesia and Rwanda, the objectives of the workshop were to share FLR experiences in the various eco-regions of the country, identify a number of FLR learning sites, and establish a national working group on FLR.
The meeting was organised by IUCN, ITTO and CTA.
The final report can be found here.

High Level Roundtable on Forest and Landscape Restoration (Summary report)
Only 1/5 of the world’s forests remain. New information to be announced on November 26 will tell us that there are many millions more hectares of lost forests and degraded lands that are suitable for restoration than previously estimated. These are landscapes of opportunity.
Restoring the world’s natural capital is good value for money and provides crucial goods and services on which mankind depends, including climate change mitigation and adaptation, food security, energy and biodiversity. Restoration activity benefits local communities and the environment as well as having the potential to deliver economic benefits in the longer term. We know how much carbon we can sequester in restored forests and lands, and how and where to do it. There is expertise out there to undertake restoration responsibly and there are ways to share that expertise.
It is this huge opportunity that has prompted the Government of the United Kingdom and IUCN to organize this High-Level Roundtable. This event is in support of the Global Partnership on Forest Landscape Restoration (GPFLR).
